Running On Holiday
Sticking to your running routine while on holiday can be tricky, but it’s totally doable – and you can still have a great time!
Here are some tips to help you balance both:
Fit Your Runs Around Holiday Fun
Morning Runs: Try getting your run in early before the day’s plans kick off. This way, you’ve got the rest of the day free for sightseeing, relaxing, or indulging in holiday treats.
Run in Scenic Spots: Turn your runs into mini adventures by exploring new places. Running along a beach, through a park, along a coastal path or around a new city can be a fun way to take in the sights and get some much needed headspace!
Stay Flexible with Your Plan
Adjust Your Runs: If you can’t stick to your plan perfectly, don’t stress. It’s fine to shorten your runs or ease off on the pace. The key is to keep moving, even if it’s not exactly what you had planned.
Swap Days Around: Got a busy day coming up? Swap your rest day with a running day, or combine two shorter runs into one longer one when you’ve got more time.
Pack the Right Gear
Don’t Forget the Essentials: Make sure to pack your running shoes, comfy kit, and any gear you usually use (like a hydration pack or GPS watch). Having your usual gear with you can help keep you motivated.
Travel-Friendly Kit: If you like to do some strength training too, consider bringing resistance bands or finding a local gym.
Make it Social
Run with Friends or Family: If anyone you’re travelling with enjoys running, join them for a run. It’s a great way to spend time together and make the run more fun.
Join a Local Running Group: Many places have running clubs that welcome visitors. It’s a brilliant way to meet new people and find the best routes. Or, find a local parkrun!
Listen to Your Body
Rest if You Need To: Holidays are for relaxing, so if you feel like you need a break, take one. Missing a run or two won’t ruin your progress.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Especially in hot weather, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating properly. It’ll help you enjoy your holiday and keep you feeling good on your runs.
Set Realistic Goals
Don’t Overdo It: Accept that you might not be able to do as much as you would at home, and that’s okay. Setting realistic goals will help you stay positive and enjoy your holiday more.
Mix It Up with Cross-Training
Try Something New: Activities like swimming, cycling, or hiking can be great cross-training options. They’ll keep you active while also letting you experience something different.
Have Fun
Balance is Key: Remember, it’s your holiday! Make sure you’re having fun, relaxing, and enjoying youself. Running should add to your holiday, not take away from it.
And remember. If you want to take a break from running, do it!
